Industry execs convened in UCLA Anderson’s Executive Dining Room on June 17th, 2009 to talk about Mobile 3.0 and how social media is changing the way we use mobile devices. Here’s what they had to say:

Amir Hosseinpour | CEO, Juice Wireless

Amir Hosseinpour is the CEO of Juice Wireless, a leading provider of mobile social networking and multimedia broadcasting technology, whose mission is to innovate rich mobile communication beyond voice and text. Juice Wireless operates JuiceCaster, an award winning multimedia sharing application distributed via major Tier 1 operators and OEMs, such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Amir was responsible for delivering the first picture broadcasting (and location sharing) service on the iPhone, Flutter – an official Apple 2008 Top 10 Most Downloaded Social Networking app on iTunes/App Store. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “Juice Wireless is doing what Apple didn’t. It’s giving iPhone 3G users some picture messaging love.” Juice’s next generation mobile social networking platform, mSocial Engine, enables operators/OEMs to deliver profitable and deeply integrated social multimedia experiences embedded in the phone. Juice Wireless is backed by 21Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures and Frontier Communications.

Amir is a recipient of a Cambridge-MIT entrepreneurship award and has over 12 years of experience building technology platforms in a diverse range of business and consumer markets.  He has deep knowledge of the mobile space as a former co-founder of On2go, a mobile content delivery platform provider in London, where he devised the product marketing strategy and managed partnerships with operators, OEMs and content providers – such as Vodafone, Orange, Samsung Mobile, Sony Ericsson, Bloomberg, and Guardian Media Group.

Amir has a B.A. (Hons) and M.A. degrees in the Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Rob Gelick | Vice President, CBS Mobile

Rob GelickRob Gelick was named Vice President, CBS Mobile, CBS Interactive in July 2008. He reports to Jeff Sellinger, Executive Vice President, General Manager, CBS Mobile. Gelick has more than a decade of experience in the mobile industry during which he has played a role in developing many industry firsts that have set product and service standards practiced by the market at large today.

In his position, Gelick oversees new mobile service development and operations across more than a dozen CBS Interactive brands including CBS Entertainment, CNET, Gamespot, TV.com, CBS News, CWTV, Chow and BNET.  Highlights among the newest product deployments within these brands include consumer applications, mobile Web sites, VOD services and advertising systems.

Prior to CBS, Gelick was one of 10 founding executives at Helio where he served as the Vice President of Data Services.  While at Helio, he created, developed and managed an award-winning portfolio of mobile social networking and media services including the industry’s first MySpace mobile service, the first complete YouTube Mobile offering, custom mobile Video and Music-on-Demand services, and a location based user-generated content publishing platform.  Before joining Helio, Gelick had an eight-year career at Motorola where he was instrumental in the company’s strategic alliance with Apple to bring iTunes to Motorola’s next-generation mobile devices. He also helped pioneer the world’s first mobile commerce and downloadable media solutions.

Thomas N. Ellsworth | CEO, GoTV Networks

ellsworth.smThomas Ellsworth brings over 20 years of strategic experience, knowledge and insight of the wireless industry to GoTV Networks as its Chief Executive Officer. Ellsworth’s drive, determination and leadership is responsible for GoTV’s place as the largest mobile media network in the industry today.  Before joining GoTV, Ellsworth served as Executive Vice President, Marketing and Corporate Development at JAMDAT Mobile. Inc. (NASDAQ: JMDT) where he helped drive the company to its highly successful IPO in 2004.

Prior to JAMDAT he was Vice President of Incubator Development and Senior Director of Business Development in the wireless division of Sprint.  This strategic Sprint incubator joint venture directly led to the formation of new wireless companies — including JAMDAT Mobile and Boingo.  During his tenure at Sprint, Ellsworth also launched the 1st CDMA market in the US and developed what became the “Free and Clear” rate plans — a pioneering change in the wireless industry.

Earlier in his career Ellsworth held senior marketing and strategy roles at California Amplifier, Inc., L.A. Cellular (acquired by AT&T) and IBM.

Ellsworth received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration – Marketing from California State University, Northridge and an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University.  Ellsworth is active in the wireless industry and currently serves as a senior advisor to GOGII, Flexilis and Digital Sidebar.

Ellsworth is also the author of acclaimed book, “The Rat The Race And The Cage”  a practical roadmap to finding a better career.

Jason Yim | President & Executive Creative Director, Trigger LLC

JasonYimTriggerWebJason Yim, President and Executive Creative Director of the Interactive Agency, Trigger LLC, brings fourteen years of digital marketing experience to ad:tech. Previously the Founder and President of Media Revolution, Yim has worked with China for seven years, including the establishment of Trigger’s wholly-owned studio in Shanghai.
Yim’s past and current clients rank among the biggest brands across a number of industries, including Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Disney, Cartoon Network, Red Bull, Jenny Craig, Nike China and Turner India. Trigger’s robust portfolio includes Web, Games, Social & Media, and Mobile projects for campaigns such as Angels & Demons, 2012, Hancock, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 3, Cars MMO and Franchise sites, Stand Up to Cancer, and WB India.
In addition to developing projects from concept through execution, Yim keeps an eye on the importance of technology and competition. In Q1 of 2009, Yim expanded Trigger’s Mobile team of iPhone game and full application programmers to additional Smartphone programmers for the BlackBerry and Android. As these two devices build up their App Stores and media services, Yim ensures that Trigger’s clients will be at the forefront. Other new client offerings for 2009 include “Trigger Replay,” the agency’s own advanced tracking and reporting product for interactive games.
Beyond interactive services, in 2005, Yim created Trigger Change, a commitment to not only do good work, but to do some good. Trigger Change participates annually in construction projects that help communities and wildlife in less fortunate countries around the world. Trigger employees’ also donate to the charity of their choice each year, which the company matches.

Duncan Campbell |Vice President of Programming & Distribution, Azuki Systems

Duncan CampbellwebDuncan Campbell is the VP of Programming and Distribution at Azuki Systems.  Campbell heads up Azuki’s new Los Angeles office and play a key role in expanding the company’s presence on the West Coast. Campbell brings to Azuki a wealth of knowledge in the world of mobile media entertainment. In his most recent role as vice president of business development for ActiveVideo Networks, Inc., he worked with major content providers to launch interactive television content services.  Prior to ActiveVideo Networks, Campbell was general manager and vice president of business development for Two Way, TV, focusing on interactive mobile and television production.

Debra Kaufman | Founder & Editorial Director, MobilizedTV.com

Debra.Teale_Two_webDebra Kaufman has covered the entertainment industry and media technologies for over 20 years. She is the founder and editorial director of MobilizedTV.com, an online news and analysis service covering content for mobile devices and entertainment programming for the mobile ecosystem. Based in Los Angeles, she writes about new media, entertainment technology and other topics for The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, TV Week, Film & Video, and many others. Her work has also been published in Wired, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and American Cinematographer.

She has spoken on and moderated panels for numerous trade shows including NXTStage, NATPE, NAB and venues such as the Sundance Institute. She is also a member of Mobile Monday/Los Angeles, on the Advisory Board of the Mobile Excellence Awards and a member of the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences interactive peer group.

Hands-on experience includes a several year stint in operations at film/TV post-production facilities in Los Angeles and New York. She also shot a documentary in Poland, and recently directed “A School of Their Own: Reading, Writing and Revolution in Nepal,” a one-hour documentary distributed by Choices Video.

She is a graduate of UC Berkeley (B.A.) and UCLA (M.A).
